The Portuguese had set their sights on Hamitic Put long before they had established a presence in Ethiopia. Pope Martin V had given permission for an African crusade in 1419, and the Portuguese-authorized by another papal decree-started trading in African slaves in 1441 (the same year that the Egyptian church pledged allegiance to Rome. By 1452 Pope Nicholas V issued another edict that basically mandated the enslavement of all non-Christians encountered during the explorers’ imperial quest.
